The St. Patrick’s Day celebration on Sunday at The Satellite, Silver Lake had several classic trappings of the holiday – with spectators breaking out into extemporary Irish jigs as well as people lilting on each others’ arms. On stage, Boyle Heights band Ollin relished the St. Patrick’s Day in their very own way, and that is by honoring the Irish punk band The Pogues that was formed in 1980s, with a kind of old world punk/folk interpretation of the album named – “Rum, Sodomy and The Lash.”

The Pogues has been honored by Ollin on each St. Patrick’s Day since the year 2003. Even though it may appear like a leap for a band of Chicano music artists from Boyle Heights as well as East Los Angeles to play Celtic rock music, actually it is very natural for the group.

Scott Rodarte, one of the Ollin band member, told that they have been playing music with punk rock roots, but on acoustic instruments, for many years. When they first started, they were rocking it and crashing and burning, but loving it.

Scott added that how how punk shows connect new and old generations. When Ollin begun playing folk music, people would name them the Mexican Pogues, and they started listening to the Celtic punk band and crazy got the idea to give it a try.

His brother Randy told that what draws us to these songs is the struggle of the working class. They are not necessarily the same things they have gone through, but it is the stories that these songs tell.

Ryan Dolan, the Strabane songwriter and singer, has been put in as the bookies’ most wanted to represent Ireland in next year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Dolan is not new to the limelight after supported starts like Jedward, Tinchy Stryder and many more in their performance throughout Ireland. At present, he is in the process to take a country wide promotional concerts for his composition called Only Love Survives.

Ryan Dolan is up against this however, as 4 other contestants have their own songs to promote before of a big showdown on Friday week on 2013 Eurosong as well as the Late Late Show where next entry Of Ireland will be selected. As like last year’s case, Irish nomination will be chosen by a combination of regional and public jury vote.

While speaking to a leading newspaper, Ryan told that things are going well till now. He has a whole lot of work to get through between now and then, but he kept his fingers crossed.

Co-written with Strabane man Wes Devine (a music producer), Only Love Survives was marked by 2013 Eurosong mentor Stuart O’Connor, who is a director of the Spotlight Productions and he is one of top choreographers and producers in Ireland. Stuart told that as soon as he discovered that he was going to be a mentor he was determined that given the opportunity, he would send an Irish singer/songwriter to Malmö this year.

The Pogues’ track ‘Fairytale Of New York’ has reached 1 million sales after twenty five years since it was released. The all time Christmas favourite, with its explosive lyrics reached the 7 – figure mark after hitting the number twelve spot this Christmas. This report was released by the official chart company.

‘Fairytale Of New York’ song was led by well known singer Shane MacGowan and songwriter and singer McColl, who passed away following a boat accident in Mexico at the age of forty – one in the year 2001. The song reached the festive top twenty spot each year in the past 8 years.

Official Charts Company’s managing director Martin Talbot told that it is really nice that in its 25th year Fairytale Of New York song has reached the coveted 1 million mark. With this it has also become the 126th million selling song in British chart’s history.

This specific song by this British band has been a festival favorite singe it was released in the year 1987. The fans of this band would be really happy to know that finally the honor has come. The song was re-released to celebrate its 25th year and it has never made it to the number one position in the chart. OCC has stated that this milestone has been possible because of the advancement in digital music downloading.

Recently, it was reported that actor Johnny Depp has collaborated with The Pogues’ frontman Shane MacGowan for a forthcoming CD of the ballad ‘The Leaving Of Liverpool.’

Shane MacGowan, the frontman of The Pogues, has recently revealed that few of his most infamous tracks were penned with the help of ghosts.

Recently, while speaking to a leading British website, he told that he actually saw people dictating to him from behind. Some call it the thirst eye. In fact, he has seen ghosts behind him in a period costume dictating songs on a couple of occasions.

The The Pogues frontman added that “A Rainy Night In Soho”, their 1991 track, is a clear example of ghost-writing. MacGowan told that he had no idea about that. He had a faint idea by the time he got to the 4th verse but still he did not have a clue what was actually going on.

Speaking about his personal life, he told that he was really very lucky to be alive. Shane MacGowan’s wife Victoria once said that Shane was very, very close to death. MacGowan added that his wife had started his heart at times.

Once, Shane jumped out of a moving vehicle in a motorway and he was also hit by a taxi that was running too fast. Speaking about that, the singer told that some people are lucky and some people are not. He thinks that he is a lucky man.

This year, “Fairytale of New York”, one of the top hits by The Pogues, marks its 25th year and it is expected that the song will be a British Christmas number one.
